Arron Hughes has earned quite the title…he is the first known human being to swim across the Hoover Dam and survive.

The dam has very strong turbines that could easily suck a person under the water and kill them so it’s amazing that Hughes is alive. And to add to this already unbelievably crazy story, he was drunk when he swam across!

The 28-year-old from the UK was in Las Vegas for a bachelor party and they ended up on the Colorado River which is right beside the Hoover Dam. Hughes explained to The Daily Post, “It was around 45-50 degrees outside and we were on a stag do in Vegas. We were all just standing there and I thought, Fuck it, I’m going for a swim. I got to the bottom and thought, I can make that. You go to Vegas to have fun, don’t you? We made the Hangover movie look tame.”

So he partied in Vegas for 37 hours straight and then decided to go for a swim?!

His recollection of the dangerous swim was pretty intense: “I literally just turned to the lads, said ‘I’m off,’ and they were all cheering me on and I swam across. It’s a hell of a sight to see the dam from underneath. I went close to the dam first and I could feel it sucking me in. I thought, I’ve got to get out of here quick.”

Hughes ended up swimming across to the other side of the Colorado River in 30 minutes. He explained, “I swam from Arizona to Nevada, I went across first and then swam back. But at the time I didn’t realise how many people had died doing it. I knew I could make it though.”

The Daily Post reports that 275 people have died there in the last ten years.

When Hughes got out of the water, police were waiting there for him and arrested him. He was given a $330 fine and released.

He said to BBC News, “I don’t have any regrets. I even have a tattoo saying ‘no regrets.’ That’s the type of person I am.”
